Girls Football 2018

From Richard Brown
Riverton Junior Football Club – Girls Football Coordinator

The season itself will commence on Sunday 29 April for junior grades and Saturday 28 April for Boys Year 7 and above.

This year I am the Girls Teams Coordinator plus the Year 7 & 8 Coach. Consequently I will be in touch with members on a regular basis and also attending schools in the area to promote Girls Football at Riverton JFC.

2018 looks promising for Girl’s football and the expectation is high. If you attended the AFL Women’s match at Perth Stadium last week you would have seen a good match and got an idea of the interest and following that is developing around women and girls football.

The AFL and WAFC have reviewed the 2017 structure and made some significant and, in my opinion very good changes to age group ranges and some of the rules. Last year, the competition consisted of two grades, Under 12 and Under 15. This year, the age groups are:

Years 3 & 4;
Years 5 & 6;
Years 7 & 8; and
Years 9,10 & 11.

The rules are too long to list here, so please refer to the Rules Flow Chart. The changes made will make for better football and the development of skills across all age groups. Games will be played on Sundays, so there is opportunity for those who play netball to do that and have a go at football as well.

Last year our club fielded an Under 12 team. The Club also had girls playing in the Year 4 and Year 6 mixed gender teams. The feedback I received was always very positive and in the games I witnessed, the girls acquitted themselves very well, so I am looking forward to those players returning to the fold for 2018. Naturally, the more girls we get to register at the Club, our capacity to manage and resource teams gets better. It is from that perspective that I ask all members to consider:

  • Registering for girls football this 2018 season;
  • Promote the Riverton Junior Football Club as a supporter of girl’s football among your friends and relatives via Facebook and other social media; and
  • Taking on a team coach or manager role.

If registrations are low, the Club will establish merged teams with the Rostrata JFC.

If you are unsure whether to register your daughter or recommend football to a friend or relative, the WAFC and East Femantle District are running “Come and Try Days” at:

  • East Fremantle Oval on either Saturday 10 or Sunday 11 March 2018. Time is TBC; and
  • Cockburn ARC (Dockers training ground) on Monday 12 March 2018 starting at 4.30pm.

If you have any questions about the Girls competition, then please contact me on 0450 398 315.

I look forward to receiving advice of your registrations.
